The Pakistani army has reported the deaths of 5 of its soldiers in a bomb blast targeting their vehicle in a region located in northwest Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan.
The attack occurred in the Karam area within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which has often been a stronghold for Islamic groups such as the Pakistani Taliban and the local branch of ISIS.
According to the army statement, an improvised explosive device detonated near a security forces vehicle, resulting in the deaths of 5 soldiers. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for Friday's attack.
The Pakistani Taliban movement is the most active of these groups in the region, regularly targeting security forces.
Attacks in Pakistan have increased significantly since the return of the Taliban to power in neighboring Afghanistan in August 2021.
In a similar attack earlier this month, 7 Pakistani soldiers were killed when their vehicle was bombed in the Lucky Marwat area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Islamabad authorities accuse Afghan officials of harboring militants who plan attacks against Pakistan, a claim denied by the Taliban government in Afghanistan.
