Two road accidents in southeastern Afghanistan have resulted in the deaths of at least 44 people, with 76 others injured, according to Afghan authorities on Thursday.
The incidents occurred late Wednesday in Ghazni Province, involving two buses, according to Hamidullah Nisar, head of the Taliban's Information and Culture Department.
One crash involved a fuel tanker, while the other was linked to a freight truck. Several of the injured are in critical condition.
Afghanistan's roads are notoriously dangerous due to inadequate maintenance, a legacy of decades of conflict, and widespread disregard for traffic regulations.
Fatal accidents are common, exacerbated by poor infrastructure and unsafe driving practices.
This latest disaster recalls a December 2022 tragedy, where 31 people lost their lives in the Salang Pass, a critical route in the Hindu Kush mountain range.
That incident involved a fuel tanker overturning, which triggered a fire and affected several other vehicles.
