On Saturday, at least four people were killed in a shooting in southern Thailand on Saturday, Thai police said, while local media reported that officers were still searching for the suspect.

The attack began at around 5 pm (1100 GMT) in the Khiri Rat Nikhom district of Surat Thani province, 600 km south of the capital, Bangkok.

"Four people died," local police chief Kryangkrai Karaikyo told AFP, refusing to give further details.

Local media reported that the shooting took place near the home of a former village chief.

Thailand has high rates of gun possession, and there have been consistent violent incidents in the past 12 months, including one of the deadliest attacks in recent history.

The kingdom was stunned in October after a former police sergeant killed 36 people, 24 of them children, in the northeastern province of Nong Bua Lam Phu.

Last month, three people were killed and three others wounded in a shooting in Phetchaburi province that ended after a 15-hour standoff.
