The number of Israelis leaving Israel permanently surged after the Hamas attack on October 7 and the ensuing war in Gaza.
However, this trend has since stabilized according to data reported by Hebrew media.
Data from the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics, cited by Channel 12, indicate a 285% increase in permanent departures in October 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.
This trend reversed in the following months, with 30,000 Israelis leaving the country permanently between November 2023 and March 2024, representing a 14% decrease compared to the same period the previous year.
The data also shows a 21% decline in the number of Israelis returning from abroad, with 8,898 returning to Israel between October 2023 and March 2024, compared to 11,231 in the prior year.
There was also an increase in the number of Israelis moving abroad in the months preceding the war, amid widespread protests against the government's judicial reform plan.
This period saw a 51% increase from June to September 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.
Channel 12 notes that CBS data counts Israelis who left the country and did not return within the following ten months, indicating those who have established their lives abroad. These figures can only suggest trends.
Additionally, the network pointed out that the decision to emigrate might not directly correlate with the date of departure, as the process of arranging immigration typically takes several months.
