Severe flooding in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, Nigeria, has resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people and the displacement of over 400,000 residents, according to Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The disaster, which occurred earlier this week, was caused by torrential rains that overwhelmed parts of the city.
The flooding has devastated local communities, with homes submerged, roads cut off, and significant damage to infrastructure.
Ezekiel Manzo, a spokesperson for NEMA, confirmed that in addition to the loss of life, more than 400,000 people have been forced to flee their homes to seek safety.
The 2023 rainy season has already wreaked havoc in several parts of Nigeria.
Earlier this year, officials raised concerns about the impact of rising water levels on communities across the country, particularly in regions like the north where infrastructure remains underdeveloped.
