In a tragic attack in northwestern Pakistan, at least three police officers were killed when armed extremists stormed a local police compound in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, targeted a police station and its adjoining residential complex in the town of Bannu, near the volatile North Waziristan region, on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
According to a police source, the assault is ongoing, with security forces still engaged in neutralizing the attackers at the scene, some of whom were reported to be suicide bombers.
Pakistani police confirmed that three of the assailants were killed during the confrontation, and operations to eliminate the remaining attackers were underway.
The attack occurred as security forces were responding to a well-coordinated strike by militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Pakistani Taliban.
A spokesperson for the group later claimed responsibility for the assault. In the aftermath, authorities closed off roads around the compound to prevent further casualties and to secure the area.
