The 64th annual Grammy Awards ceremony honoring top performances in music has been postponed.

The show had been scheduled to take place at an arena in downtown Los Angeles and broadcast live on the CBS network on January 31.

“After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community, and our many partners, the Recording Academy and CBS have postponed the 64th annual Grammy Awards show," the Recording Academy and CBS said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

The statement continued: "The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31st simply contains too many risks,".

"A new date for the event will be announced soon,” the statement concluded.

This is the second time the ceremony to been hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Last year’s event also were postponed due to the outbreak. The ceremony was staged in March instead of January and included a mix of pre-recorded and live segments in front of a small, socially distanced crowd.

The Grammys are not the only event to be hit by the highly transmissible Omicron variant. The Sundance Film Festival recently announced that its program will be completely virtual in 2022.

Furthermore, Hollywood's TV and movies productions have been impacted by positive tests of celebrities, including Lupita Nyong’o, and Whoopi Goldberg.
