The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) announced that nearly 200 of its schools in Gaza have remained closed since October 2023, with many repurposed as shelters for displaced residents.
Despite the closures, UNRWA teams have been working in some of these schools to reintroduce thousands of children to learning through recreational activities and psychosocial support.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza, now in its 336th day, began after Hamas launched Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, 2023, in response to Israeli actions in Jerusalem and the annexation of Palestinian territories.
The situation has escalated, with the Palestinian Ministry of Health reporting 40,939 deaths and 94,616 injuries in Gaza since the conflict began.
The prolonged fighting has devastated Gaza’s infrastructure, affecting essential services like education and health, while international efforts to broker a ceasefire have yet to succeed.
