Senegalese authorities recovered over 20 bodies from the sea off the country's northern coast on Wednesday, following the sinking of a migrant boat attempting to reach Europe, as reported by the governor of the Saint-Louis region.
Alioune Badara Samb, in a telephone interview, stated that "just over 20 bodies" were found, adding that around twenty passengers were rescued.
"Since the afternoon, we have been finding bodies brought in by the waves," he said, while local rescue teams and the navy continued to search for survivors into the night.
An increasing number of migrants have been embarking from the Senegalese coast towards the Spanish Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Spanish government noted that in 2023, the number of migrants arriving at the Canary Islands had tripled, reaching nearly 40,000.
