Palestinian officials reported that during a noon Israeli army arrest raid in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, two Palestinians were murdered and more than twenty-two others were injured.
It was the most recent act of violence in the West Bank's ongoing unrest, which has seen Israeli raids practically every day and Palestinian attacks that show no signs of slowing down.
The raid, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, took place in Nablus; the names of the two victims were not immediately made public. 25 persons suffered injuries, according to the government.
While claiming to have forces working in Nablus, the Israeli military gave no other details. Video captured by a bystander appeared to show Israeli soldiers moving through the centre of Nablus and army trucks firing tear gas canisters.Since the beginning of 2023, at least 51 Palestinians have died in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. According to data from the Israeli rights organisation B'Tselem, last year saw approximately 150 Palestinian deaths in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, making it the worst year there since 2004.
Israel claims that the majority of those slain were gunmen, although there have also been reports of adolescents opposing the raids and unrelated individuals being killed.
While the Palestinians see the military operations as further solidifying Israel's ongoing, 55-year occupation, Israel claims that they are intended to dismantle militant networks and prevent future assaults.
In the 1967 Middle East conflict, Israel seized the West Bank, east Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, which the Palestinians wanted for their aspirational independent state.
