Switzerland's police have reported that two individuals were killed and another injured in a shooting incident in the city of Sion on Monday.
According to the police in the Valais canton, the suspect, an unidentified man, fired multiple gunshots at different locations in the city of Sion, which is home to around 35,000 residents.
In response to a series of attacks in Europe since 2015, Switzerland enacted a law last year to facilitate police surveillance of potential attackers, including children as young as 12 years old.
Under the law, orders can be issued to prevent travel and movement from the age of 12 and impose compulsory residence from the age of 15. Legal recourse can also be sought to challenge various measures.
At the time, the Swiss government stated that such measures were necessary to prevent cases like two siblings (aged 15 and 16) traveling to Syria in 2014 and subsequently being convicted of supporting "ISIS."
Before the law was passed, about 60 legal scholars warned that it could pave the way for arbitrary decisions. Human rights experts at the United Nations argued that it violated human rights standards.
