Gunmen attacked a polio vaccination team in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday, killing a health worker and a police officer assigned to protect the team.

The incident occurred in a region bordering Afghanistan, just two days after Pakistan launched its latest national campaign to eradicate polio, which remains a significant health threat in the country.

The attack took place in the Bajaur tribal district as the vaccination team was administering polio drops to children in a residential area.

Authorities confirmed that unknown gunmen opened fire on the team, tragically resulting in two deaths.

Despite global efforts to eradicate polio, Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only two countries where the disease persists.

Pakistan's government recently launched a nationwide campaign aiming to vaccinate up to 30 million children, emphasizing the importance of this critical public health initiative.
