1st Muslim President Elected at Harvard Law Review

The Harvard Law Review named Harvard Law School student Hassaan Shahawy, a Los Angeles-born Egyptian-American, as its 135th president.

Shahawy is believed to be the first Muslim president in the law journal's 134 years history.

In a statement, he expressed his hope that his election represented legal academia’s growing recognition of the importance of persity, and perhaps its growing respect for other legal traditions.

The Harvard Law Review is are one of the most prestigious U.S. law journals and is staffed by the top students at U.S. law schools, who are often recruited for judicial clerkships and other prestigious jobs in the profession.

Many legal and political notable inpiduals had worked at the prestigious U.S. law journal including former U.S. President Barack Obama, who was named the journal’s first Black president in 1990.

 

In 2016, Shahawy graduated from Harvard as an undergraduate with a degree in History and Near Eastern Studies, and then attended the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar to pursue a doctorate in Oriental Studies and studied Islamic law.

Shahawy has been active in working with refugee populations and on criminal justice reform.

He succeeds Michaeljit Sandhu.
