A fire broke out Wednesday evening at the Hendek open women’s prison in Sakarya province, northwestern Turkey, leaving 19 inmates injured due to heavy smoke inhalation.

Sixteen of the affected inmates were treated and released from hospital after receiving first aid and being checked for their health, while three remain under medical care for further treatment, according to reports.

Authorities confirmed that all inmates were evacuated to safe areas within the prison complex in the Akpınar district immediately after the incident to ensure their safety. Rapid response by firefighting teams contained the blaze to a limited area, preventing it from spreading to residential wards.

The Sakarya Public Prosecutor’s Office issued a statement confirming that the fire originated in the storage section of the facility. The exact cause is still under investigation. Officials emphasized that there was no danger to the lives of inmates or staff. The injured, initially reported as 11, were taken to hospital as a precaution.

A comprehensive judicial and administrative investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances and cause of the fire.
