Sixteen Pakistani soldiers lost their lives in a deadly militant assault on an army post near the Afghan border, intelligence officials reported on Saturday.
The overnight attack occurred in the region of South Waziristan, part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
According to a senior Pakistani intelligence officer, about 30 militants targeted the military post in the remote area of Makeen.
The assault also left five soldiers critically injured, highlighting the growing security challenges in the border regions.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the area has witnessed frequent violence from militant groups operating along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier.
