A Houthi drone targeting King Abdullah airport in Jazan was destroyed on Monday, according to the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, injuring 16 civilians.
Civilians within the airport were injured by falling shrapnel from the damaged drone.
According to the coalition, the drone was fired from Sanaa airport and was directed against civilians.
On Monday, the coalition announced that an armed drone had crashed in the Jazan village of Al-Mabouj. There were no injuries recorded.
Earlier this February, Saudi air defences foiled a cross-border terrorist strike against Abha International Airport by Iran-backed Houthi fighters using an armed drone.
As a result of shrapnel dropping over the facility, twelve citizens of various nationalities were injured. According to the Saudi-led Arab coalition’s joint forces, the Houthis in Yemen have chosen brazen escalation by striking civilian airports.
They promised to strike places in Yemen’s Sanaa where the group stage their terrorist drone attacks. The coalition accused the Houthis of targeting civilian airports with the threat of reprisal.
It urged residents of Sanaa to vacate civilian areas that are being used for military operations within 72 hours.
The “barbaric” attack on Abha airport, according to Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki, was a “war crime.”
Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and India were among the injured.
At Abha Airport, minor damage was observed.
Malki emphasised that the coalition will respond to the threat by taking the appropriate operational measures to safeguard people.
