At least 15 people were killed after a residential building collapsed in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, authorities said on Sunday, after search and rescue operations were completed.
According to the National News Agency, the five-story apartment building collapsed in the Bab Al Tabbaneh neighborhood, one of the city’s densely populated areas. The death toll was confirmed by Lebanon’s Civil Defense following hours of intensive rescue efforts.
Civil Defense Director General Imad Khreis said rescue teams managed to pull eight people alive from beneath the rubble of the collapsed structures. He added that emergency crews worked through difficult conditions to search for survivors amid the debris.
Earlier on Sunday, local officials reported that two adjacent residential buildings had collapsed in the same neighborhood, triggering shock and grief across the city. The incident has renewed concerns over building safety and ageing infrastructure in parts of northern Lebanon.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collapse, as residents and officials called for urgent measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
