10 Killed, 20 Injured after Bus Crashes into Tree in Bangladesh

In the early hours of Sunday, a passenger bus ploughed into a tree in Bangladesh's southern Barishal district, killing at least ten passengers and injuring 20 more.

The injured were rushed to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, according to the officer-in-charge of Wazirpur Police Station, who also stated that "the death toll is expected to rise," according to a Bangladeshi newspaper, The Daily Star.

The tragedy happened about 5:30 a.m. in Barishal's Wazirpur Upazila, when the driver of a Bhandari-bound Jamuna Line bus lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree on the side of the roadway.

As a result, nine people died on the spot, according to Dhaka police, and another died in the hospital while seeking treatment.

According to The Daily Star, the deceased were not immediately recognised by the Wazipur OC.

According to another publication, the Dhaka Tribune, Md Jahangir, unit head of Barisal Fire Service and Civil Defense, two firefighting units from Gournadi and Wazirpur fire stations are currently involved in rescue operations.
