At least ten individuals, primarily firefighters, were injured while attempting to control a blaze at a large crude oil storage facility in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq.

The fire erupted around 9 PM on Wednesday at a substantial crude oil depot located along the Erbil-Kuwer road, according to the civil defense authorities.

Rescue teams are still battling the fire, which continues to emit thick black smoke, as reported by an AFP photographer.

Over 30 rescue teams arrived at the scene on Wednesday night, awaiting the complete burning of the oil stored in the depot to fully control the flames.

The civil defense in the capital of the Kurdistan region stated that more than ten people were injured, most of them civil defense personnel from Erbil.

The blaze also destroyed three fire trucks and four storage tanks used for bitumen and oil.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. The flames have spread to another refinery, exacerbating the situation.
