A person has died and three others are missing due to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall in the Tohoku region of northeastern Japan.
According to NHK, Japan's national broadcasting organization, the severe weather has resulted in unprecedented rainfall.
Yamagata Prefecture experienced nearly 400 mm of rain within 24 hours by this morning. The downpour has caused four rivers in Yamagata and Akita prefectures to overflow.
Japanese authorities have indicated that the risk of flooding remains extremely high in the lower reaches of the Mogami River in Yamagata Prefecture.
Consequently, more than 2,300 people were forced to evacuate to temporary shelters.
The heavy rains have also disrupted train services. Partial suspension of operations is expected on the high-speed Yamagata Shinkansen line between Yamagata and Shinjo stations, which had already experienced temporary suspension yesterday.
Earlier today, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued warnings about the heightened risk of river flooding and landslides in the Tohoku region due to the continued rainfall.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
