Argentina’s Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata has appointed Diego Maradona as new coach.

He was named as a new manager for Argentina’s club until the end of the season.

Gimnasia are bottom of the Primera Division as they failed to secure any victory since they started the league.

El Lobo have only one point after five rounds of the Primera Division as they were defeated in four clashes, while they held a 1-1 draw against Lanús.

Maradona, Argentina's 1986 World Cup-winning captain, will face a new challenge in his career as a manager as he is required to save Gimnasia from their current position.

Gimnasia will be Maradona’s sixth stint as a club coach and his third in Argentina.

“With his last two teams, he succeeded in consolidating a clear and competitive playing style,” Gimnasia said in a statement, according to the Guardian.

On his part, the 58-year-old expressed his happiness over his new post. "I am very happy to be the new coach of Gimnasia," Maradona said.

He thanked Gimnasia's president Gabriel Pellegrino for giving him the chance to lead the club.

Maradona promised El Lobo's fans that he would spare no effort in achieving their dreams, saying, " We are going to work with our hearts and souls for El Lobo."

Argentina's former captain led his national team as a coach for two years from 2008. He guided his national team to the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa
