The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, also known as the New Library of Alex is located very close to where the original Royal Library of Alexandria once stood before being totally destroyed.

The construction of the new library began in 1995 and it was officially opened seven years later in 2002. The building as it stands today is well and truly a masterpiece, and definitely worth a visit even if you have no interest in reading any books.

The Pompey Pillar is a huge monolithic Roman pillar located in Alex, its the only thing that remains of a massive temple colonnade marking the Serpeum location .

Many historians point out that the pillar has in fact been incorrectly named because it was actually erected during the year 297 AD during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. The reason for the Pillar of Pompey being erected was to commemorate the victory of the Romans over a revolt that was taking place in Alexandria at that time.

Alex National Museum includes thousands of artifacts to narrate the history, not only Alexandria, but the history of Egypt over ages. The museum displays and highlights the under water antiquities and multimedia documentation of their discovery under the waters of the Mediterranean. Items displayed include Pharaonic, Ptolemaic, Greek, Roman, Coptic, Islamic and modern artifacts from the 'Muhammed Ali' Dynasty.
