Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Egypt, H.E. Kim Yonghyon met with H.E. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment on Jan 22 to discuss ways to expand bilateral cooperation in the environment sector.

Ambassador Kim mentioned that Egypt proved its leadership to the world by successfully hosting COP27 in 2022 and contributed a great deal in tackling global challenges of climate change.

Ambassador Kim lauded Minister Fouad for her leadership spearheading Egypt’s efforts in implementing various innovative environmental policies including the overhaul of waste management system and the introduction of green bonds.

Ambassador Kim introduced the Korean government’s recent contributions in fighting climate change including the pledge of additional $300 million to Global Climate Fund that President Yoon Suk Yeol announced on the occasion of G20 summit in New Delhi last September.

Ambassador Kim emphasized that the upcoming inaugural Korea-Africa summit this year will be a great momentum for Egypt-Korea collaboration in enhancing Africa’s capabilities in dealing with climate change.

Ambassador Kim said he is pleased that the bilateral cooperation between Korea and Egypt in the environment sector is active, in particular in the area of ‘waste to energy (W2E)’.

Previously, a Korean company, JST, successfully constructed solid waste processing facilities that can turn solid waste into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) in Sohag, Minya and Mahalla.

This year the Korean Ministry of Environment, together with the Egyptian Ministry of Environment, will launch a new project that focuses on technology transfer in the W2E sector through an $8 million project that will be implemented from 2024 to 2026, the Korean side will build a W2E facility and a technology transfer center in Cairo and share Korea’s knowledge and experiences in the area.

Minister Fouad said she appreciates the Korean government’s cooperation in various projects and introduced Egypt’s efforts in establishing environment-friendly infrastructure to build a ‘circular economy’ in the country.

Minister Fouad added that she hopes more Korean companies can seek investment opportunities in Egypt in the field of environment.

Ambassador Kim and Minister Fouad agreed that they will continue to work together to support the ongoing bilateral projects and explore new projects of mutual interest in the environment sector.
