The Ministry of Interior in Kenya said that the number of people who died as a result of floods and other repercussions of the heavy rains sweeping the country has risen to 228 people.

Heavy rains, which have caused widespread floods and landslides across Kenya, are expected to increase, according to Reuters.

The ministry said in a statement that more floods are expected to occur in low-lying, riverbank and urban areas, while landslides and mudslides may occur in areas with steep slopes, cliffs and valleys.

The floods destroyed homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure in East Africa's largest economy.

The Interior Ministry said at least 164 people were injured due to bad weather and 212,630 people were displaced.
