A new discovery was carried out by an Egyptian archaeological mission, headed by the renowned Egyptologist, during its work at Saqqara Necropolis, according to Ali Abu Dashish, a member of the Saqqara mission.
In his address at a press conference on Jan. 26, Hawass revealed the latest archaeological discovery in Saqqara, is featuring a large cemetery and nine beautiful statues: one represents a man and his wife; several are servant statues; and others represent individuals.
"The tombs also contain carved pieces belonging to the owner of the tomb, which the mission is currently working on assembling," he noted.
Speaking to Sada Elbald English (SEE), acclaimed American archaeologist Mark Lehner, the Director and President of Ancient Egypt Research Associates and Zahi Hawass co-worker, said: “We visited Dr. Zahi two years ago, so I think that we saw the beginning of these discoveries, but It’s very impressive and beautiful.”
Meanwhile, Colvis Reossillon, a young French archaeologist and one of the expedition told SEE: "We discovered an amazing statue named Messi, who might be the supervisor of the nobles, and a priest in the pyramid complex of Unas, the last kind of the fifth dynasty."
"We also unearthed three stone statues dating to the fifth and sixth dynasties of the Old Kingdom and representing a person named Fetek," he added.
Dr. Hawass said earlier that the most important was the discovery of a shaft 15m deep, adding that a large rectangular limestone sarcophagus was found at the bottom of this shaft.
"When the sarcophagus was examined, it was found to be completely sealed with mortar, just as the ancient Egyptians had left it 4300 years ago. When the lid was raised, we found the mummy of a man covered with gold leaf."
This mummy may be the oldest and most complete mummy found in Egypt to date, Hawass pointed out.
Over the past years, Egypt's archaeological mission had revealed a number of crucial archaeological discoveries in the Saqqara archaeological area, including the discovery of hundreds of colorful human coffins containing mummies in a good state of preservation for senior statesmen and priests of the 26th Dynasty, which came among the top 10 archaeological discoveries in the world for the year 2020.
