More than a century after the first American billionaire (in terms of measurable dollar value), the question of who will be the first to become a trillionaire remains. At least six companies have done so, the latest being Berkshire Hathaway, which surpassed $1 trillion before Warren Buffett’s 94th birthday, according to a report by CNBC .
Nvidia is now worth $2.6 trillion, having reached the 13-figure club last year.
According to a new report from Informa Connect Academy, which predicts the first trillionaire based on average annual growth in wealth, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is likely to be the first.
Musk is currently the richest person in the world, with a fortune of $251 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Connect Academy predicts that Musk will become a trillionaire sometime in 2027, assuming his wealth continues to grow at an average annual rate of 110%.
The next person to become a trillionaire, according to the report, is expected to be Indian Gautam Adani, founder of the Adani Group. If Adani maintains his current annual growth rate, the report says he will become a trillionaire in 2028.
According to the report, Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, who has seen his wealth rise from $3 billion to more than $90 billion in five years, will become a trillionaire by 2028. His wealth will have to continue to grow at an average annual rate of 112%. Nvidia stock is already up about 115% this year, after more than tripling last year.
Fourth on the list is Indonesia’s Prajojo Pangestu, founder of Indonesian energy and mining conglomerate Barito Pacific. The report predicts that Pangestu will become a trillionaire by 2028.
LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault, currently the world’s third-richest person, with just under $200 billion, will be in fifth place. The report suggests he will become a trillionaire sometime in 2030, along with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Some other billionaires who look like strong candidates to quickly crack the top 10.
Jeff Bezos, currently the world’s second-richest person, with a fortune of $200 billion, according to Bloomberg, is listed at No. 12, and won’t become a trillionaire until 2036.
Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are also set to wait 12 years to become trillionaires — though artificial intelligence could accelerate their rise.
Wealth watchers have certainly been predicting the first trillionaire for years. Tesla, Nvidia and LVMH stocks may not rise as fast in the next five years as they did in the past five.
However, more than 100 years after the first billionaire, the first trillionaire may be crowned in the next decade.
