The Italian Agricultural Federation (Coldiretti) announced that with the start of the wheat harvest season in Tuscany, the drought reduced the crop by 30%.
The Italian newspaper, "Messaggero" indicated that in the first monitoring process conducted by the Italian Agricultural Federation, it was found that yields per hectare had decreased by an estimated rate of between 20% to 30%, which would eliminate the very low-profit margins basically for grain farmers who had to submit to increases in average current costs by 68%, according to the Agricultural Research Council and the Agricultural Economics Review.
The Italian union said that "harvesting wheat, barley, and oats in Tuscany has begun, but it has not gone as well as expected. Drought due to almost no rain in the crucial months of February and March, and record high temperatures in May have erased recent hopes for a harvest or a better harvest."
