The United States has warned that Iranian missiles and drones pose a serious threat to American forces deployed across the Middle East, stressing that Washington maintains the option of preemptive defense if necessary.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iran continues to possess thousands of ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, despite the country’s economic difficulties. He noted that these capabilities allow Tehran to threaten U.S. troops stationed throughout the region.
Rubio stated that between 30,000 and 40,000 American soldiers are currently deployed at nine military locations across the Middle East, adding that all of them are within the operational range of Iranian missiles and drones. He emphasized the need for the United States to maintain sufficient defensive and deterrent capabilities to protect its forces and allies.
The secretary of state also confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump continues to keep the option of preemptive defense on the table, while expressing hope that tensions with Iran do not escalate into open military conflict. Rubio stressed that Washington is closely monitoring Iran’s actions and carefully assessing all potential developments.
Rubio further cautioned that any scenario involving the collapse of Iran’s leadership or the removal of its supreme leader would be highly complex and unpredictable. He said no clear answers exist regarding what would follow such a development, noting that it would require serious and detailed consideration, particularly regarding the future presence of United States forces in the region.
