Long-term chairman of Egyptian Premier League side Wadi Degla, Maged Samy, has announced that he will be stepping down.

Samy is the founder and chairman of Wadi Degla.

He was praised for leading the club in a very professional manner, often associated with having a ‘European-style’ management.

He is also the owner of Belgian side Lierse S.K and Greek Super League 2 club Ergotelis FC.

Now, 18 years after founding Degla, Samy announced his departure.

“Because every story has an ending, I announce today the end of an 18-year journey full of struggles. Goodbye Wadi Degla,” Samy wrote on his official Facebook page.

Founded in 2002, Wadi Degla have had one of the most impressive rises in Egyptian football.

They were able to secure promotion to the Second Division by 2009 before reaching the Egyptian Premier League the following season, the first team to do so since Arab Contractors in 1981.
