Launched by NASA on September 5, 1977, Voyager 1 has become the farthest human-made object in space, now over 15.67 billion miles from Earth.
Its mission, originally to study the outer planets, has provided decades of groundbreaking data and milestones, including entering interstellar space in 2012.
In November 2026, Voyager 1 will reach a new milestone: one light-day from Earth (about 16.09 billion miles).
At that distance, messages take 24 hours each way to travel between Earth and the probe.
The mission is expected to end around 2036, when it runs out of power and drifts beyond communication range.
Still, Voyager 1 will continue its silent journey, heading toward the Oort Cloud, which it won’t fully exit for another 30,000 years, and eventually passing near a star in Ursa Minor in 40,272 AD.
