US Senator Lindsey Graham warned that President Donald Trump could order lethal action against Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, if Iranian authorities continue using deadly force against protesters, as demonstrations spread across Iran.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Graham addressed Iranian protesters directly, saying the United States supports them and stressing that Trump’s approach differs sharply from that of previous administrations. He told Khamenei that continued violence against citizens demanding better living conditions could trigger a decisive response from Washington.
Graham said that major political change is coming to Iran and described it as potentially the most significant shift in the Middle East in decades. He argued that U.S. actions in other countries, including the arrest of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, should serve as a warning to Iran’s leadership that Washington will not tolerate violent repression of protesters.
Iran has witnessed widespread demonstrations in several cities in recent days, driven by worsening economic conditions. The unrest has led to clashes between security forces and demonstrators, resulting in the deaths of 36 people, including both protesters and security personnel, and the arrest of more than 1,200 individuals, according to reports.
Following the outbreak of protests, Trump said the United States was closely monitoring developments in Iran and remained ready to act if violence escalated. He warned that any large-scale killing of civilians would prompt a strong response from Washington.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned Trump’s remarks, describing them as reckless and dangerous, and accused the United States of interfering in Iran’s internal affairs.
