US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the war with Iran could end soon, claiming that there is “virtually nothing left to target” after extensive military strikes.

In a brief five-minute phone call with the news site Axios, Trump indicated that the military campaign had largely achieved its objectives. “Only small things remain. Whenever I decide to end it, it will end,” he said.

Trump also told Axios that the military operation has progressed faster than expected, adding that the damage inflicted on Iranian targets exceeded initial projections. “The war is going very well. We are far ahead of schedule. We’ve done more damage than we expected, even during the original six-week timeframe,” he said.

Despite the remarks, Axios reported that US and Israeli officials confirmed the American president has not yet issued any internal directive regarding a formal end to the fighting.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the war would continue without a specific timetable. Speaking on Wednesday, Katz stated that military operations would proceed “as long as necessary until we achieve all objectives and win this campaign decisively.”

Trump also accused Iran of destabilizing the Middle East over decades, saying the current military campaign was a response to what he described as years of violence and regional interference.

“They wanted the rest of the Middle East,” Trump said. “They are paying the price for 47 years of death and destruction they caused. This is the punishment. They will not get away with it easily.”
