United States Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said late Saturday that a key messaging system for pilots in the United States had suffered a temporary outage that could cause flight delays on Sunday.
The Federal Aviation Administration is working to restore the Notification of Air Task Force (NOTAF) system, Duffy said on the X platform.
"There is currently no impact to the National Airspace System due to a backup system in place... The FAA has set up a hotline for aviation stakeholders and will provide updates on the status of the system every 30 minutes," he said.
He added that travelers should contact their airlines to check on the status of flights on Sunday, noting that "some delays may occur tomorrow morning," referring to Sunday morning.
In January 2023, the Notification of Air Task Force system outage caused the first complete flight hiatus in the United States since 2001, grounding more than 11,000 flights.
NOTAM provides pilots, flight crews, and other users of U.S. airspace with critical safety notifications, such as when taxiway lights are turned off at airport runways, parachutist activity is nearby, or a specific runway is closed due to construction.
