US and Japanese foreign and defense ministers emphasized that instability in the Middle East resonates throughout the international community, impacting the security and economies of the Indo-Pacific region.
In a joint statement from the 2024 US-Japan Security Consultative Committee, also known as the "2+2" talks, the four ministers reaffirmed their commitment to seeing a ceasefire and a detainee agreement in Gaza, as well as a negotiated two-state solution to the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict, stressing that this solution would involve an independent Palestinian state, ensuring Israel's security, and enabling both Palestinians and Israelis to live in just, lasting, and secure peace.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, during their meeting with their Japanese counterparts Yoko Kamikawa and Minoru Kihara in Tokyo, underscored the importance of the US-Japan alliance as the cornerstone of peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
