Energy Information Administration (EIA) data on Friday revealed that the United States imported crude oil and petroleum products from Iran in the past two quarters despite sanctions against Tehran.

EIA data showed that the U.S. imported an estimated 36,000 barrels per day in October 2020 and 33,000 bpd in March 2021 from Iran for the first time since 1993.

The United States has imposed sanctions against Iran since 1984, banning all arms sales and U.S. aid to Iran.

In 2018, Donald Trump canceled the nuclear deal with and imposed new sanctions. On the other hand  President Joe Biden allowed negotiations to begin on a new nuclear deal with, not  enforcing sanctions on as aggressively as the Trump administration.

EIA data showed that US imports from Iran occurred between the handover from Trump to Biden and the first two months of the current administration.
