The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said that contaminated drinking water and the lack of health infrastructure threaten the lives of children around the world.

The UNICEF reported from New York today, Monday, that more than a thousand children under the age of five die every day worldwide due to diseases caused by polluted water, lack of sanitation, and poor hygiene.

A new analysis by the organization shows that 190 million children in 10 African countries are at risk.

The UN organization added that the situation is more serious in the African countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Somalia located in West and Central Africa.

Many of these countries suffer from instability and the presence of armed conflict, which further complicates children's access to clean water and sanitation.

According to the United Nations, two billion people around the world - one in four - do not have access to clean water.
