United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced serious concern over the recent escalation in Venezuela, warning that the latest developments—culminating in US military action—could have troubling repercussions for the wider region.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Guterres said that regardless of the internal situation in Venezuela, the unfolding events represent a dangerous precedent. He stressed the need for full respect by all parties for international law, including the United Nations Charter.
Warning Against Breaches of International Law
“Whatever the circumstances in Venezuela, these developments constitute a serious and alarming precedent,” the Secretary-General said, reaffirming that adherence to international law must remain absolute and universal.
A separate statement released by Stéphane Dujarric, the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson, said Guterres is deeply troubled by the apparent disregard for international legal norms, underlining the UN’s long-standing position on the primacy of multilateral rules and institutions.
Call for Dialogue and De-Escalation
Guterres urged all parties involved to engage in inclusive dialogue grounded in respect for human rights and international law, warning that further escalation could undermine regional stability and global norms governing the use of force.
The statement reflects growing concern within the United Nations over the implications of unilateral military actions and their potential to erode the international legal framework designed to preserve peace and security.
