The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, condemned on Monday the military coup in Burkina Faso.
Earlier, Burkina Faso’s army said it took control of the country on Monday, deposing President Roch Kabore, dissolving the government and parliament, suspending the constitution and shuttering its borders.
In a televised statement, Captain Sidsore Kader Ouedraogo said that the military had seized power in response to the “ongoing degradation of the security situation” in the country and the “incapacity of the government” to unite the population.
This comes a day after troops seized barracks, and gunshots were heard in the capital.
On Sunday, heavy gunfire erupted at military camps, a move which the African Union and West African regional bloc ECOWAS have denounced. They described it as an attempted coup in Burkina Faso.
