The United Nations Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, has emphasized the urgent need for measures to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
He highlighted the heartbreaking scenes of destruction and suffering endured by the people in Gaza.
According to the United Nations Information Center, Wennesland witnessed the devastating impact of the hostilities firsthand.
He visited Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis and met with local officials to discuss ways to address the immediate needs of the population. He stated that what he saw in Gaza serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of the conflict.
Wennesland referred to what he described as a serious proposal on the table outlined by U.S. President Joe Biden, urging all parties to reach an agreement immediately to achieve a ceasefire and release hostages.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) reported that the situation in northern Gaza remains desperate, with infrastructure in ruins. Families are seeking shelter wherever possible, including in UNRWA facilities that have suffered significant damage.
UNRWA pointed out that restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities have stifled humanitarian response efforts, noting that crucial desalination plants have ceased operations due to a lack of fuel in Gaza.
UNRWA also emphasized that people do not have enough water, highlighting that survival has become a significant challenge.
Families, including children, are forced to walk long distances to obtain the water necessary for survival. The agency called on Israeli authorities to provide immediate access to water.
