UN: Gaza Child Malnutrition Triples Amid Aid Blockade

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has issued a stark warning that cases of Gaza child malnutrition have tripled in less than six months, describing the situation as a preventable humanitarian catastrophe.

In a statement, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said that the surge in malnutrition among children under the age of five is “not the result of a natural disaster but of man-made starvation that could have been avoided.” He stressed that humanitarian aid organizations have been denied access to deliver critical supplies into Gaza for over six months.

UNRWA teams have screened nearly 100,000 children in the Gaza Strip since March, and the results show an alarming rise in acute malnutrition. “This is a crisis that continues to deepen while aid convoys are deliberately blocked,” Lazzarini stated.

The agency reiterated its appeal for unimpeded humanitarian access to allow the delivery of life-saving food and medical supplies. Lazzarini emphasized the urgent need for safe corridors to resume the flow of humanitarian aid through UNRWA and other aid agencies operating in Gaza.

This comes amid growing international concern over the deteriorating conditions in the besieged Palestinian enclave, where prolonged conflict, displacement, and access restrictions have left children among the most vulnerable.

As the humanitarian crisis worsens, global aid organizations are urging world powers to press for immediate action to lift the blockade and prevent further deaths among children suffering from malnutrition and preventable diseases.
