UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate halt to attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure following a deadly Israeli airstrike on the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah.

Guterres urged all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further escalation in the region.

The airstrike, which took place on Saturday, was in response to Yemeni Houthi attacks on Israeli-linked civilian vessels and long-range missile and drone strikes on Israel, as reported by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

According to Houthi-run al-Masirah TV, citing the Ministry of Health, the attack resulted in the deaths of at least three people and injuries to around 87 more.

Guterres expressed deep concern over the airstrikes, noting significant damage to civilian infrastructure.

The statement also highlighted Guterres' ongoing concern about the potential for further escalation in the region, urging all sides to exercise utmost restraint.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that the port of Hodeidah was being used by the Houthis to receive weapons shipments from Iran.

This accusation comes amid a backdrop of increasing hostilities between Israel and the Houthis, who have been attacking Israel-linked commercial shipping in the Red Sea since October.

Netanyahu also referenced a recent drone strike on Tel Aviv, which resulted in one death and at least ten injuries, an attack for which the Houthis claimed responsibility.

The Houthis, a Shia Islamist group controlling a significant portion of Yemen, have vowed to continue their attacks as long as Israel's military operation against Gaza persists.

The ongoing conflict raises concerns about a broader escalation in the Middle East, with both sides exchanging airstrikes and accusations.

As tensions continue to mount, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that will prevent further loss of life and destruction.
