The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has allocated $6 million to enhance humanitarian aid for Sudanese refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan and seeking refuge in Egypt.
This funding, part of CERF’s rapid response initiative, will strengthen UN efforts in Egypt and provide vital life-saving support, including emergency food and cash assistance, as well as water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
Additionally, the funding will bolster protection services for refugees.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which escalated in April 2023, has resulted in the fastest-growing refugee crisis worldwide.
Recent data shows that Egypt is currently hosting about 1.2 million Sudanese refugees, making it the largest host country for those fleeing the conflict.
Elena Panova, the UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt, stated, "As the number of refugees continues to rise daily and with winter approaching, their needs are increasing.
This funding from the Central Emergency Response Fund will provide additional aid and protection to newly arriving refugees, addressing both their immediate and long-term needs."
