The United Kingdom has announced new sanctions targeting individuals and organizations linked to acts of violence against civilians in Syria, including figures accused of financially supporting the former government of President Bashar al-Assad.

In a statement released on Friday, the British government said the measures are aimed at holding perpetrators accountable while safeguarding efforts to stabilize Syria following the collapse of the Assad administration last year.

London stressed that while it has eased certain sanctions to support reconstruction and recovery, it will continue to act against those seeking to undermine peace and security in the country.

According to the Foreign Office, the sanctions target individuals involved in violent incidents in Syria’s coastal region in March, as well as abuses committed during the country’s long-running civil war. The measures include asset freezes and travel bans and apply to four individuals and three organizations. Two of those sanctioned are accused of providing financial support to the Assad regime.

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said accountability and justice for all Syrians are essential to achieving a durable political settlement.

She emphasized that lasting peace in Syria depends on confronting past and ongoing violations against civilians.
