UFC 319: Khamzat Chimaev Crowned UFC Middleweight Champion

Khamzat Chimaev becomes the new UFC middleweight champion. The Russian fighter dethroned South Africa’s Dricus Du Plessis early Sunday at the United Center in Chicago, claiming a unanimous decision victory in a one-sided contest.

Chimaev dictated the pace from the opening bell, securing more than ten takedowns and spending the majority of the fight controlling Du Plessis on the ground with relentless pressure, knees, and punches.

The only real scare for Chimaev came in the fifth round when Du Plessis locked in a guillotine attempt, forcing the challenger to defend what proved to be the fight’s lone moment of danger.

All three judges scored the bout 50-44 in favor of Chimaev, who extended his perfect record to 15-0.

While the crowd expressed its frustration at the wrestling-heavy affair, Chimaev was unfazed, celebrating his victory in trademark fashion.

“Happy, happy always,” he said. “Get my money. Dana, save my money, brother.”

Chimaev was quick to credit his opponent, praising Du Plessis for his toughness:

“That guy is strong to the finish. He’s got great heart.”
