Qatar’s International Media Office said in a statement “work is underway” to reopen embassies “as soon as possible," while the UAE announced that “the activation of diplomatic ties, which will include the reopening of embassies, is under process between both countries.”

The UAE, as well as Bahrain, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, launched a boycott of Qatar in 2017 and banned the country's airline from its airspace, also imposing other restrictions.

The four countries have been angry about Qatar's ties to Islamists and Iran, as well as other allegations during President Donald Trump's administration.

The move sparked the biggest diplomatic crisis between Gulf Arab states since Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

Trump appeared to support the four countries at first, though he later hosted the Emir of Qatar at the White House in 2019.

Qatar, whose wealth comes from an offshore natural gas field it shares with Iran, is home to the forward headquarters of the US Army's Central Command.

While Kuwait's then-emir warned that the dispute had verged on armed conflict, the boycott ended in 2021 before President Joe Biden took office.

Qatar's hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup witnessed the attendance of the President of Egypt and the Saudi Crown Prince at the opening. Since then, Qatar's relations with Bahrain and the UAE have also improved.
