U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday sharply criticized those who oppose his tariff policies, calling them “fools” in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump claimed that his tariff strategy has made the United States “the richest and most respected country in the world,” while unveiling a new proposal to distribute $2,000 payments to every American, excluding high-income earners. The payouts, he said, would be funded by revenues generated from tariff collections.
The announcement comes as the U.S. Supreme Court deliberates on the legality of Trump’s tariff measures, which have been central to his economic agenda since his return to the White House. The court is expected to rule on whether the executive branch exceeded its authority in imposing broad trade duties without congressional approval.
Tariffs have long been a cornerstone of Trump’s economic platform, which he argues protects U.S. industries and reduces the trade deficit. Critics, however, say the policy raises consumer prices, strains relations with key trading partners, and risks triggering retaliatory measures.
In his post, Trump doubled down on his defense of the tariffs, asserting that “America wins when we put our workers first” and dismissing opponents as “weak globalists who never understood how trade really works.”
The proposed $2,000 distribution marks one of the most direct attempts yet by the Trump administration to link tariff revenues to domestic economic benefits — a move analysts say could have significant political implications ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
