As 2026 begins, Numbeo’s latest report on quality of life in African countries highlights the nations offering the most balanced living conditions, based on economic and social indicators such as purchasing power, cost of living, safety, healthcare, climate, and pollution.

The rankings reflect the experiences and evaluations of residents themselves.

1. South Africa

South Africa tops the list with a quality-of-life index of 150.9, driven by high purchasing power (112.0) and a strong healthcare system (64.0). Favorable climate (95.7) and relatively robust infrastructure enhance its appeal, though safety remains a challenge (25.5), and commuting times average 38.4 minutes. Moderate living costs (37.1) and diverse urban opportunities make the country the most attractive for residents.

2. Tunisia

Tunisia ranks second with a quality-of-life index of 117.6, supported by good safety (55.1), advanced healthcare (56.6), and moderate purchasing power (36.3). Affordable property prices (12.8) and pleasant climate (94.3), combined with reasonable living costs (29.1) and manageable commuting times (33.0 minutes), create an appealing environment for work and life.

3. Morocco

Morocco comes third with a 114.1 index, offering medium safety (53.0) and healthcare standards (46.8). Purchasing power (46.5) and cost of living (31.4) are reasonable, while property prices (13.4) remain affordable. Residents enjoy urban amenities alongside natural beauty, with a favorable climate (90.3) encouraging outdoor activities.

4. Kenya

Kenya ranks fourth with a quality-of-life index of 99.4, featuring medium safety (44.9) and strong healthcare (62.2). Living costs are relatively low (28.9) and purchasing power moderate (36.7), though Nairobi faces significant traffic congestion, with average commuting times of 51.6 minutes. The climate (87.1) and natural attractions enhance the country’s appeal, particularly for professionals and expatriates seeking economic opportunities.

5. Egypt

Egypt completes the top five with an 81.9 index. Safety is moderate (53.6) and healthcare is average (47.9). Low living costs (21.6) offset challenges such as high property prices relative to income (20.4). Favorable climate (85.3) and relatively short commuting times (47.6 minutes) make Egypt an accessible and practical option for economic and professional life in the region.

This ranking highlights the diversity of African countries, showing that quality of life is shaped not just by income, but also by safety, healthcare, infrastructure, and environmental conditions.
