A24 and Picturestart are teaming up on "The Masque of the Red Death", a wildly revisionist and darkly comedic take on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe. They are in negotiations with Sydney Sweeney to star.
Charlie Polinger is writing and directing, with A24 handling domestic distribution. Polinger will also executive produce alongside Lucy McKendrick.
The Poe short story follows a prince who attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. Details behind this new take are being kept under wraps. Sources say the movie will be shot this year.
Sweeney had herself a busy 2024 that included the hit rom-com "Anyone But You" and the Neon horror thriller "Immaculate". She also had the HBO pic "Reality", which earned her a Critics Choice Award. The Euphoria and White Lotus star is currently filming the Lionsgate adaptation of the novel "The Housemaid".
Playwright, director, and auteur Polinger is currently in post on The Plague, which was made independently and stars Joel Edgerton. The film will be produced by Spooky Pictures and Lizzie Shapiro and financed by Imagenation.
