Spain has announced an additional €2.3 billion (£2 billion) in aid to support the reconstruction of Valencia following the region’s most devastating floods in modern history.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez made the announcement on Wednesday, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing the extensive damage caused by the disaster.

The catastrophic floods, triggered by torrential rainfall, have claimed the lives of over 220 people, with five individuals still reported missing.

The deluge inundated suburbs south of Valencia’s regional capital, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.

The tragic scale of the disaster has been described as unparalleled in recent Spanish history, according to reports from the French news outlet Zone Bourse.

This new financial package is in addition to the €14.36 billion (£12.6 billion) in aid previously allocated for emergency relief and reconstruction efforts.

The combined funding will focus on rebuilding infrastructure, restoring homes and businesses, and supporting affected communities in their recovery process.

The floods in Valencia serve as a stark reminder of the growing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, with many experts linking such incidents to climate change.

As Spain grapples with the aftermath, the government’s response aims to provide both immediate relief and long-term resilience for the region.
