While initial production was adversely affected by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, the third installment of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise made a speedy dash for the finish line and officially wrapped.
Director Jeff Fowler announced the news on X and shared a behind-the-scenes photo of himself with a giant clapperboard which is emblazoned with the character of Shadow the Hedgehog.
"And we are WRAPPED," he captioned.
The appearance of Shadow in the third installment comes as the character was teased in the mid-credits scene in "Sonic the Hedgehog 2", but character details have largely remained hidden.
"The fact that Shadow is clearly going to be in the franchise moving forward, I don't think it's revealing anything to say we'd love to incorporate elements from [video games] Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, his solo spinoff game," Josh Miller, who co-wrote Sonic the Hedgehog 3 alongside Patrick Casey, teased in 2022.
"Sonic the Hedgehog" is an action comedy movie based on the video game franchise published by Sega.
Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of the titular character in the film, with Jim Carrey also returning to give life to Sonic's archnemesis, the nefarious and scheming inventor, Dr. Robotnik.
Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno will produce the threequel.
The first movie, which was released in 2020, was a box office hit bringing in more than $319 million worldwide. A sequel would follow in 2022 that added Idris Elba voicing Knuckles the Echidna and Colleen O’Shaughnessey voicing Miles “Trails” Prower, Sonic’s yellow-orange fox sidekick.
The follow-up movie brought in $405 million at the worldwide box office.
Before the sequel had officially been released, a third movie had already been greenlit. Paramount Pictures and Sega also announced the development of a spinoff TV series revolving around Knuckles with Elba confirmed to reprise his role.
"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" races into theaters on December 20.
